Interview: Erik Lau, MentorConnex new Chief Experience Officer (CXO), shares his love of fine chocolate, design, and Back to the Future.

I am really excited to share that Erik Lau has joined MentorConnex as our Chief Experience Officer (CXO).

As well as being a lover of fine chocolate and 1985 classic ‘Back to the Future’, Erik brings a huge amount of experience and knowledge of both marketing and experience design.

Erik and I caught up so I could ask a few questions about his background, his views on MentorConnex and more.

What gets you fired up professionally?

I get excited when I see courage. Someone who breaks free from the default, who takes on Goliath. Someone who stands for something.

Awesome! Tell us a bit about your background.

I’m a data-driven Experience Designer and I’ve been in the digital space since the early internet era. Started off as a project manager with an agency in Stockholm and somehow over the years I’ve drifted into the digital marketing area, both client- and agency-side. Nowadays I’m slowly shifting my focus back to designing and crafting experiences.

My entrepreneurial side has meant that I’ve started my share of ventures. A small IT consultancy, a not-for-profit and more recently a chocolate maker business. All great learning experiences.

You were born in Hong Kong but grew up in Sweden, and now call Australia home. How did you end up in Australia and what do you love about this country?

It all started when I was looking for ways to go somewhere where I could live and surf. The solution ended up being me going to Wollongong for a year and study at the University of Wollongong. Not a great deal of studying but definitely lots of surfing. That was in 2001.

10 years later, my partner Sarah and I decided it was time to escape the cold of Sweden and go on a new adventure so we moved to Australia. It’s a bit far away for family and friends to visit but we’re so happy to call Australia our home.

As well as being Chief Experience Officer for MentorConnex, you have a vested interest in fine chocolate. Tell us a bit about that?

It’s very enjoyable to eat chocolate, so when my partner Sarah decided to start her own chocolate maker business Tilda & Cacao I decided I should be part of it. Part to help her realise her dream, part to be the Chief Tasting Officer.

It has turned into something a bit bigger than we planned but we’re excited to run with it. It’s exciting and overwhelming to try to run a small business matching our values while keeping the “debates” between us at a manageable level.

What is it about MentorConnex that get’s you excited?

We all have moments when we ask ourselves why we’re doing what we’re doing. A good friend shared with me his defining “soul-searching” moment, and it was when his son asked him “what do you do for a living daddy?”.

The day when my daughter asks me the same question, then I want to be able to tell her that I help individuals, organisations and businesses to make a difference so future generations can choose to be whatever they want to be.

That’s why I wanted to join MentorConnex as CXO. I see it’s a way for organisations and businesses to reach their aspirations and to make a difference.

Lastly, tell us a fun fact about yourself that you don’t often share?

I can re-watch a movie I like, over and over and over and over again. Lost count how many times I’ve watched Back to the Future.
